As part of this merger, Colonel William Henshaw became Frankfort's first mayor and first collector of taxes. The city of Frankfort was officially incorporated on December 11, 1826. It quickly developed into one of the most important commercial cities in Northwest Indiana due to its location on the main road linking Chicago with Indianapolis and Cincinnati; from here traders could bring goods all over America and export them back to Europe or Asia.
