That year, Fort Dearborn was also established nearby on land that now makes up parts of eastside streets near current-day Eads Avenue and Griggs Road. The area around what is now downtown fortwayne was once part of an encampment used by Native Americans for hunting and fishing purposes. The first European to arrive in what is today Fort Wayne were French traders who set up shop here from 1795 until 1800 when they were driven out by American settlers led by George Rogers Clark. In 1830, Indian trader John Ralston Purcell set up shop west of where he currently stands on Griggs Road north of I-465 between Foster Street and Carpenter Avenue; this location became known as "Ralston's Bog." A year later, he assigned his brother James RalstonPurcell to purchase alluvial soil east of I-465 from local farmers in exchange for goods they could produce thereupon such as flour and cornmeal. This opened up what became known as "Ralston's Prairie" which extended down to current day Indy North side along Foster Street from I-465 south to Carpenter Ave., just across from today's IUPUI campus (now part of Hyatt Regency). In 1836, whileIndian Removal operations were still ongoing under President Andrew Jackson, some US soldiers discovered a group living among the Pottawatomies (Cherokee) living near present day Delaware Park Cemetery northwest of downtown fortwayne - these soldiers called these natives "the Shawnees." When asked about their origins - which some residents believed were French - many Of these Shawnees said they had come overland with Tecumseh during his final attempt at forced migration before being driven back across the Ohio River into Canada several years earlier; others claimed that their family had been moved from their original homeland near Stroudsburg Township (now Monmouth County) Pennsylvania due to battles between British forces and Patriot militia during the Revolutionary War era particularly those fought near Dunbar Heights (present day Clearfield Township). That same year Captain John Ziegler laid out a town plan for fortwayne entitled: "A Sketch Map Showing What may Be Done For Building a Town In This Place." On January 9th 1840 Ziegler submitted his map concept to Acting Governor Leland Stanford with instructions "…to lay out practicable streets leading into & out thereof …Allowing two hundred houses within & without it – but no more than two hundred houses within any street at any time" - this document remains largely unchanged ever since! Today only a small portion or outline remains extant with much Alteration taking place during different periods including portions becoming home to IUPUI/Hyatt Regency Campus/Indiana University Kokomo Campus etc., making it difficult if not impossible for researchers or especially historians studying earlyFortWayne history specifically! On April 14th 1841 non commissioned officer Major Denton Holmes prepared an official report recommending further development & expansion plans for what would become known as Downtown Fort Worth including demolishing old buildings along State Street NW & Adams Boulevard NW (& replacing them with new architecture based upon sketches prepared by Major Holmes), erecting additional buildings along Market Street NW (& Allowing 100 houses per block hereafter), developing FtW into an even larger commercial center averaging 300 stores per block each (& surrounding neighborhoods consisting entirely or almost entirelyOffice buildings— ex: Wabash Railroad Depot— [now retail] space”)—all recommendations ultimately becoming reality! These plans eventually resulted in Downtown FtW becoming one of America’s largest shopping destinations featuring major name brands like Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade atmosphere!, Sears Roebuck store opening just blocks away soon afterwards followed by JCPenney inside newly built Terminal Tower complex—both anchors holding important freight traffic throughout much OF Downtown FortWayne today! Development continued apace resulting ultimately in Commercial Center District being established encompassing much MUCH older portions still standing today inside Historic District boundaries!! In short Downtown FtW quickly morphed into one large vibrant City envisioned by its founders over 150 years ago!!!
