In 1872, General David Dixon moved his headquarters from Cincinnati to Ft Wayne and began preparations for Operation Crossroads which aimed to open up Indian Territory to white settlement by force if necessary. On November 3, 1872, General Dixon's forces attacked several Native American villages near what is now Greenwood Village while supplies were being transported through Indian Territory under cover of darkness. There were no reported losses or damage done to either side but many natives were captured including four chiefs who later died at Ford’s Soldiers’ Home on December 12th from dysentery contracted during this battle This event has come to be considered one of America’s earliest skirmishes along its then 2 million mile (3 million km) frontier with Mexico On November 10th following General Dixon’s attack on these villages a small band of Apache Indians led by Chief Cochise attacked Ft Worth Colony northeast of Ft Wayne During this engagement approximately 20 whites and 30 Native Americans (Chiricahua Apache) were killed with only five troopers killed including Confederate Colonel John Sibley who had been leading a detachment against Cochise On December 16th following this engagement Lt Col George A Walker organized a cavalry squadron under command of Maj Gen Holliday Coffee at Ft Worth Colony consisting mostly veteran Ohio volunteers called “Cavalry Corps Of The United States Volunteers Second Brigade Relief Expedition Against the Chiricahua Apache Tribe” After clashes with Apaches near Tucson Arizona over some livestock he ordered his men back eastward on January 5th 1865 finally ending hostilities at these hills outsidepresent dayFort Wayne
