In 1928, the club changed its name to the Fort Wayne Arsenal Association and began producing assault weapons for the military. They also produced a shotgun division in 1951. In 1984, their shotgun division merged with another company to form Brownells Firearms Corporation. Brownells has since been inactive but their firearms production continues today at a facility located in Mishawaka, Indiana.

In 1802, General Anthony Dearborn organized a force to capture Mobile Bay from British forces and founded Fort Dearborn at present-day downtown Fort Wayne. After years of skirmishes with Native Americans, settlers abandoned Dearborn's original fort after he proved unable to protect them from hostile Indians. In 1825, General James Kapp established a post at what is now known as Victory Park in central Fort Wayne to serve as an artillery school for Indian scouts who were then mapping out NorthwestIndiana Territory on behalf of United States President Andrew Jackson. That same year, Kapp also built a military hospital at what is now Old World Plaza inside the current City Hall Historic District). In 1827–28, under Ulysses S. Grant’s command, Fort Dearborn became an important base for operations during his campaign against Mexican forces occupying California; by 1830 it had been converted into a military prison where prisoners included many Californios freed by Ulysses S., including José Joaquín de la Bodega y Costilla y Pavón (the “Father Francisco”), one of Mexico’s most notorious criminals and warlords. After Mexican independence there followed various wars between Provinces of New Spain and Mexico over control over portions northward along the upper Ohio River Valley—the region now comprising Indiana—including much that are still part of today’s Indianapolis metropolitan area: these include parts or all of Lucas County (now southwestern Michigan), Hendricks County (now eastern Illinois), Tippecanoe County (now northwesternIndiana), Clinton County (now northeastOhio) andPresent-day Ottawa County (northwesternIndiana). When finally admitted into Confederation as the nation’s 15th state on November 8, 1787—just two weeks before Detroit was founded—Fort Wayne was among its first communities to rise up against British rule; by 1790 it had become home to more than 1,000 settlers initially engaged in agriculture but soon began developing industry including building flour mills and making cannons for America’s fledgling War for Independence against Great Britain.)
