Fort Wayne is a city in Indiana, United States. The population was 81,872 as of the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Porter County. It lies on the Canadian River and borders Michigan to the east, Ohio to the south and west, and Fort Wayne Township to the north. In 1814, General Winfield Scott's army invaded what was then British territory in what is now western Michigan while under command of Major General Anthony Wayne (the future Ulysses S. Grant). On July 8, 1814 at Steubenville Landing on the St. Joseph River near present-day Fort Wayne, Scott's army discovered an Indian village occupied by several thousand Indians who had been living there for years without being raided or disturbed by white people. After some skirmishes during which both sides suffered heavy losses, Scott negotiated a peace treaty with the Indians that recognized their right to live among their own people and not be subject to outside rule. The first permanent settlers in Fort Wayne were Frenchmen Pierre-Edmond Demarest and Isaac Buttlar in 1824; they named their settlement "Niles" after Spanish general Santa Anna y Costilla who had surrendered at Cerro Gordo following a naval battle there two years earlier. In 1830, Englishman George Stephenson founded his steamboat company here and developed a railroad from Detroit downriver past Niles Station into central Indiana as part of his efforts to establish deepwater shipping routes through Lake Superior route via Chicago instead of going through Europe via Liverpool and Amsterdam. Stephenson also built a small fort at Niles which served as headquarters for operations out of downtown Indianapolis until 1862 when he moved it upriver across the river into what is now Porter County so that he could build his new station further upstream on later branch lines from Niles Station. During World War II (1939-1945), much activity took place within Fort Wayne including production of rubber products for military Use such as tyres for tanks and artillery shells used against Germany; aluminum alloy materials such as airplane wings are also produced here today along with other goods needed for war effort like automotive parts The post-World War II boom period for downtown Indy began with population growth rates outpacing those seen anywhere else in America due largely to suburbanization over time; however Downtown Indy experienced significant decline beginning around 1990s due largely to increased automation/offshore outsourcing taking place away fromIndiana jobs in manufacturing sectors throughout Midwest region

An internal battle occurred within Fortress troops over policy towards Catholics which eventually led to their expulsion from the fort in 1851 following an investigation by General Philip Sheridan into allegations that soldiers had looted supplies from Catholic churches during operations against Native Americans at Sand Creek Massacre two years earlier.
