By 1900, it had reached its current size with over 200,000 residents and remained an important cultural center until its decline in recent decades. Today,Fort Wayne is a small town located nears downtown Indianapolis which retains much of its historic character despite experiencing some decline in popularity over recent years

The fort was built on land that had been donated by important local landowners, including Judge Isaac Greenleaf. The first commander of Fort Wayne was Major James Nicholson. In 1814, Fort Wayne became part of the United States when it gained independence from France. It served as an arsenal until 1861, when it became a garrison town. In 1872, Fort Wayne merged with other nearby towns to form the city of Fort Wayne.
