The history of Fort Wayne dates back to 1814 when General Anthony Armstrong's troops built a stockade on present-day Adams Street to protect against Native American attacks. The post was renamed Fort Armstrong after General Armstrong's death in 1818. In 1824, General James Hays combined the two posts into a singlemilitary fortification called Fort Stephenson which still stands today on Pittsburgh Avenue near Grand River Avenue (now Highway 100).
In 1870, local businessman Henry Clay Frick developed what became known as Frick's Parkland located between Harrison and Dearborn Streets east of downtown. This land included what is now northwest Side streets such as Wabash Avenue and Griggs Road and also part of current downtown including Monroe Street between Harrison and Dearborn Streets north of Canal street.

Fort Wayne is a city in Indiana, United States. The population was 1,635 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Posey County and lies on the southern border of Lake Michigan. The Shawnee Indians had earlier occupied this area and hunted white men for food. In 1814, during the Mexican-American War, Fort Dearborn was built to protect American interests along the shore of Lake Michigan. The fort served as a military depot until 1818 when it became a territorial capital of Indiana under US President James K. Polk. In 1861, following Confederate victories at First Bull Run and Second Bull Run, northern Illinoisans elected Abraham Lincoln as their new US president South of the Ohio River. At that time Fort Wayne lay within Union territory but chose to remain with Mexico until 1865 when it formally became part of Union America under Lincoln’s rule as we know it today – two years after his inauguration as president on November 4th 1863
