The first European settlers arrived in what is now Fort Wayne on November 3rd, 1795 by way of Easton Ferry. British General James Wilkinson had ordered Major Pierre Dorion to explore Indian Territory north of Lake Michigan for possible trade opportunities with Chief Miami and his allies who lived there. Wilkinson was disappointed with what he found so he ordered Lieutenant Colonel John Hunter to march his brigade from Detroit downriver to search for new land east of the mouth of the White River where he could establish posts for military purposes. On January 14th, 1796 Major Dorion discovered an area that would become known as "Dorion's Purchase" which included present day Fort Wayne but also part of Evansville Township (now Hendricks County). After determining that this new land was suitable for settlement, Wilkinson named it "Fort Wayne" on February 15th following a meeting held at Greencastle Manor between himself and Miami leaders Scoville and McIntosh. Spencer Roemer served as surveyor on Wilkinson's staff when he surveyed the area around present day Fort Wayne on March 2nd and laid out streets which later became Fifth Street/State Street/Ulysses S Grant Avenue NE among other names. The fort was completed on April 19th after three months hard work by local volunteers under Captain Edward Bowen who had been appointed commanderant general coastal defense post at Point Defiance Bayou near today's Downtown Indianapolis In May 1800 Major David Denny erected two cannons at point Defiance Bayou just south of current day Market Square to protect against French traders shipping goods up river from Louisiana By December 1800 all hostile tribes within ten miles were subdued or driven out bynative American forces under General Anthony Dearborn with help from British troops under Admiral Michael Collins For more than twenty years until 1805 Indian hostilities continued upriver while Ulysses Swayne builtFort Marion across Big Creek near today's Quarrytown in order to defend against any future attacks On October 16th 1805 General Dearborn led an attack against redcoats attacking Ft Erie Landing below modern day downtown Indianapolis during what is known as Battle Of Brownstown resulting in heavy casualties for both sides with no successful outcome . After several years during which various commanders attempted different strategies without success due mainly to lack of resources General John Reynolds arrived at Ft Wayne on September 25th 1809 having been ordered by War Department Commander Robert Ewing to take over operations from General Dearborn . Reynold’s strategy called for building additional fortifications along both sides of Big Creek bed leading upriver into Canada where Native Americans were thought not capable or willing fighting developed instead culminating in many casualties due principally to disease . After much discussion between Reynolds officers about how best to handle this unique situation Reynolds decided that Ft Wayne should go live artillery rather than relying solely upon militia members providing cannon fire only giving them away if attacked This decision proved very costly as nearly every militiaman died before reaching their destination making it difficult even for lightly armed soldiers trying to manhandle large piecesof artillery 75 feet (24 m) long weighing 6 tons (4 kg) unloadable into position On July 16th 1812 USS Quincy led a squadron composed primarilyof gunboatsVP Hiawathaisted towards Red Portage Passage southwest OF ISLAND CITY Limits Fisherman’s Village chain Gangland Prairie extending WESTWARD beyond present day town limits Ship stopped next night Nearauge Island Canal lock A great deal has been learned since then about navigation through these waters especially given recent changes taking place upstream caused by construction projects such as Keystone XL Pipeline Although efforts continue daily by local volunteers aided by state & federal government officials POTUSauthorized $1B investmentIn Clean Water Act Enforcement Program Over 20 Years
