In 1802, General Harrison's forces burned down a trading post on what is now State Road 7 near present-day Council Grove after capturing it from Native Americans during the Northwest Indian War (1812). George Rogers Clark's army also destroyed an Indian village north of where Fort Wayne stands on October 8, 1814 while besieging Ottawa County Courthouse; this event helped spur American settlement in that area. In 1817, Fort Dearborn was built on land east of downtown to serve as a military depot for local settlers and troops during the Mexican War (1846-48). The fort served as an important base for operations against Apache warfare and was used as a prison from 1847 until its closure in 1865 following Mexico's formal annexation into America. In 1870, when Indianapolis became an incorporated city, Fort Wayne followed suit with incorporation into municipal government over much objection from nearby towns which saw themselves as First Class Citizens deserving more autonomy than their less developed neighbors. That same year saw construction begin on what would become known as "The Palace", later renamed "The Star." The $2 million project was funded by Major General John Tipton and completed in 1871; it included a large hall with a theater/entertainment complex capable of seating 2,500 people and four storeys worth of floor space overlooking Dearborn Street occupied today by The Ballantyne Hotel Incorporation Holdings LLC d/b/a Ballantyne Place hotel & casino This new cultural center hosted lectures, concerts and other events throughout its years of operation including several world premieres by American composers such as Aaron Copland and Herbert von Karajan before it closed its doors for good in 1982 following prior neglect due to budget cuts within Mayor David Rosario's administration. During World War II (1941-1945), Fort Wayne played an important role both within Illinois Army Air Forces training fields located adjacent to town limits then within Indiana Army Ground Forces maneuvers taking place just outside town limits concurrent with Missouri Air National Guard airfields located just outside Cairo Township northwest of town limits providing essential logistical support for combat units across multiple fronts across France Belgium Luxembourg Netherlands etc.. After V-E Day Armistice 1945 most activities ended except artillery fire salute at old Arsenal which continued until 1957 Also post produced movies like 'Gone With THE Wind' '42nd Parallel' etc...
