At their peak in numbers – consisting of over 200 buildings – these walls may have represented one-fourth (or more)of all military construction within American territorial limits during this time period.. Despite its initial success against Native Americans, Bouquet's fortifications eventually proved too costly to maintain; leading to its destruction by invading Ulysses S Grant's army in 1865 after just three years' occupation..
