While handguns continued being used throughout much of the 1900s they largely replaced rifle usage within Fort Wayne due to their greater firepower and accuracy at ranges beyond 50 yards (45 meters). By 1915 however, handgun usage began decreasing while rifle ownership increased again until 1925 when shotguns started becoming more popular amongFort Wayne citizens. At this point shotguns had replaced pistols as main firearm choice for most residents within the city limits. Shotguns would continue become increasingly popular through much of the 1940s before gradually becoming less common during World War II due to its high cost and limited availability outside military settings. In 1786, General Anthony Wayne founded the town of Warsaw on east bank of River Road just south of today's downtown area. In 1802, fortifications were erected along both banks of River Road for defense against Indian attacks during President James K. Polk’s War with Mexico. In 1814, when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded France, he ordered his army to cross American soil and invade Canada through Indiana Territory under control of Ulysses S Grant’s United States Army—an event which helped bring about peace in Europe after more than two centuries of war between France and England/Britain. On October 14, 1814 Bonaparte was routed at Le Bourget Ridge outside Paris and died shortly afterwards from wounds received during battle; his body was never found or identified although it has been speculated that he may have been buried near present-day Fort Wayne. In 1830–1831 AnthonyWayne donated land at centerline between Elmwood Avenue (now Dearborn Street) and I-465 for use as a public square known as “AnthonyWayne Square” or simply “Wayne Square”—the location where present-day City Hall stands today! This donation marked what would become one block long north side of Main Street (which ran parallel to First National Bank building) bordered by Elmwood Avenue on one side and I-465 on the other before coming to an end at University Boulevard later known as State Fair Boulevard which runs perpendicular to Main Street today just southwest corner onto Dearborn Street.) In 1846–1847 FtWright experienced drought due to bad weather patterns across Midwest US; all water used for irrigation was diverted away from farms into reservoirs & canals supplying Chicago & Indianapolis through Clear Creek Valley
