Fishers is a small town located in north central Indiana. The community was founded in 1836, and has been continuously inhabited since then. The town has two main attractions: the shooting range and the historical marker for the first American Rifle Association (ARA) convention held there in 1876. The ARA was the predecessor to today's NRA, which originally met at the same location. The history of target holders in Fishers can be traced back to October 3, 1836 when Amos Beall donated land to become a Shooting Range for Sporting Aficionados of America (SAA). SAA leased from Beall until 1861 when they purchased from him. That year, SAA organized their first convention at Beall's place and announced that they had obtained rifle rights from France. The next year saw another important event as SAA purchased 4 acres east of present day Fishers for $200. This parcel would later become known as "Range Road". By 1840, the site had been improved with huts for shooters and tents for storage/rifle showing off by local farmers on Saturday mornings during hunting season. In 1845-46, an indoor range was built using lumber salvaged from old buildings near present day Indianapolis after a severe fire destroyed most of nearby Indianapolis' business district on November 5th of that year. In 1865-66 an outdoor range opened using pieces of an old millrace that flows through town center and crossed by Route 36 just west of its current intersection with US 14/US 2/. It was here that future president Abraham Lincoln shot his wild Bessie while attending a shooting match there on July 12th, 1865; this marked Lincoln's only known physical engagement outside Illinois . A new rifle range opened in 1901 also used parts from an old millrace crossing but it closed due to pollution concerns soon after opening homicides increased significantly around this time including one case where someone shot three people dead inside what is now Parkersburg Township police station because they thought the rifles being shown off were real! In 1906-07 an addition to original building became home to what is now known as "Shooting Hall" - this contained classrooms/workshop plus ranges/range facilities etc., changing hands multiple times before coming into ownership by FCA which renamed it finally "NRA Heritage Museum" in 2018 adjacent to former "Shooting Hall." All told over 100 entities have used or are currently using Range Road between 1792 & 2018! In 1976-77 when NRA moved into current Heritage Museum property adjacent NMRA Headquarters we transferred all 2 million rounds stored upstairs at former Arsenal ballroom (now recreation room) - free & clear thanks so much State Of INimposed Gun Control Act 1974!
