Fishers, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Posey County, Indiana, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Fishers was founded by David Fisher in 1814 as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1828, it became a port for dumping cornstarch from nearby Westville. By 1840, fishing had become an important economic factor in the community and fishing fleets were established to catches bass, catfish, and other fish species found along the Ohio River. In 1862, nine local men formed the Fishers Fishing Club to promote fishing and commerce in their community. They purchased two shotguns each and started shooting sportswidows (firing pistols) to raise money for charity. The club continued this program until 1865 when they disbanded because of prohibition laws prohibiting rifle/shotgun shootings inside homes without written consent of owners or managers. The first handgun shooting season opened on July 4th 1895 in Fishers with 141 entrants from 25 states represented including 11 from America's capital Washington D.C.. This event was featured on an Indy 500 race car race television show called "Race Across America". At that time pistols were still limited to Colt revolvers but shotgun ranges were opening up all over America so there was no reason not to try handguns too!

The first settler in Fishers was John Fisher who arrived in 1786. The town was founded in 1812 by Captain George Witherspoon and settlers from Kentucky as a post office under the name of Mount Vernon. In 1816, it became the capital of Indiana Territory when all of present-day Indiana was added to the Union as a state. In 1818, General David Hunter named Fishers after his friend and predecessor on the U.S.-British warpath Andrew Fisher who had died near modern day Indianapolis two years earlier while leading an Indian force against American forces under General Winfield Scott. In 1827, William Haines surveyed what would become today's downtown Fishers and laid out streets that still run through it today including Third Street (later renamed State Road), Fourth Street (now Main Street), Fifth Street (now Washington Avenue), Sixth Street (now Broadway) and Seventh Street (now Elm). Haines also built what is now known as Old Fort Harrison on land he donated to the municipality in honor of his late friend and business partner James Kriegerhoff who had served with distinction in both World War I and World War II as Commandant of Bermuda Hundred Naval Militia Company No 3 which fought aboard USS "Iwo Jima" off Okinawa during Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1944. Fishers grew rapidly due to its access to water resources and its location along Interstate 65 making it easy for businesses to relocate from other parts ofIndiana or from adjacent states such as Illinois or Missouri which were growing increasingly industrialized during this time period. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in Fish Stevensville Township with about 60 acres (24 ha) annexed into town limits that year alone according to Town Records kept by Clerk Mable Martin until her death four years later at age 83 years old which left behind long term impacts on municipal government operations including but not limited to: establishment/ operation of a Library; streetlights; fire protection; trash collection; zoning ordinances; building permits; election procedures etcetera
