Fishers is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is the county seat of Hendricks County. Fishers was founded by John Fisk in 1814 as a log trading post on the then-rural Indiana side of the mouth ofthe Wabash River. In 1847, Fisk's son John A. Fisk donated land to make up what is now Fishers Township. The town was originally named for General Andrew Fisher, who fought in both world wars and died in 1919 while serving as Commandant of Fort Wayne (now Terre Haute). The first post office was established in 1852, and remained open until it closed in 1903. The first store opened in 1870. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century with new buildings being erected along Main Street including three churches (1872), a school (1875), a hotel (1901), and a movie theater (1920). During World War I, Fishers joined many other towns across central Indiana in support of the war effort by manufacturing munitions such as gasoline and ammunition; most notably, they produced shells for American artillery used against enemy targets abroad. After the end of World War II, growth slowed down as technology replaced traditional jobs with computer programming or other high-skill positions; however, some recent developments have seen renewed growth with several new businesses opening up over the past few years alone including an online retailer and two restaurants providing local cuisine to residents throughout Hendricks County Today, Fischer has become known for its annual Festival of Arts which takes place during Memorial Day weekend; its vibrant downtown district filled with cafes and restaurants; good schools - all public schools are accredited by Common Core standards - making it one of America's most educated communities; easy access to Interstate 5 for shopping and commuting opportunities; free parking available on municipally owned lots close to various stores

In 1880, the community became known as "Fishers" after Gouverneur Morris Fisher, an American statesman who helped to create the United States Constitution and served as its first Secretary of State. In 1907, the name change to "Vanderburgh". On July 1, 1912, Vanderburgh County merged with Dearborn County to form Butler County. On December 16th of that year, Butler County abolished its own government and merged with Vanderburgh County again; this time effective January 1st 1913.
