Fishers is an incorporated city in the U.S. state of Indiana, with a population of 54,711 as of 2010.[1] The name "Fishers" was given to the community by early pioneers because it was on a bend in the Cumberland River where many fish could be seen. Fishers has become known for its manufacturing and agricultural industries and for its annual Sturgeon Festival which takes place in late August or early September. Fishers began as a farming village on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1824. In 1836, James Fisk founded the town of Fishers, naming it after his father-in-law Samuel Fisher who had settled there previous year. By 1840, though small, Fishers had developed into a thriving commercial center with over 30 stores and 20 families). At that time, fishery products included cornmeal (a staple food for many years), flour, soap, candles and more. In 1850 local miller John Stanley built a large frame mill which still stands today and produced flour, paperweights and other items until 1922 when it was replaced by what is now called Indus Valley Paper Works Corporation. In addition to its commercial activities, Fishers also became home to several churches including First Presbyterian Church (1824), United Methodist Church (1868), Scientist Baptist Church (1896) and Christ Episcopal Church (1926). The village housing development began south of Main Street in 1907 and ended up reaching north sideof Main Street just east of School Road in 1956. One reason why this area got so much attention during those years was because most residents worked at one or more nearby factories which generated booming jobs prices during that period - making life very affordable for both locals and newcomers alike! However, during World War II both AT&T and other northern Indiana companies lost much valuable equipment while serving in Europe and their plants were turned over to local Allied control;henceforth known as "the war years". Afterward, significant industry left Fishers - including paper manufacturing - until recently when continued economic development has led to renewed business interests hereabouts Today's downtown district is home to several cultural attractions including The Memorial Theatre which stages productions throughout the year; beginning with "The King And I" on December 3rd each year; Pacers games at Lucas Oil Stadium starting November 16th annually follow this tradition;and also variety shows such as Cirque du Soleil's "Caesar", Shakespeare's Globe production of "Love Of Life" starring Govan reciting from memory (February 6th each year), numerous art galleries including Contemporary Art Gallery housed within MARCO Biagi architecture museum also open for visitation during regular business hours; along with several restaurants/bars all anchored around First National Bank plaza complete with outdoor seating for warm summer days or colder winter nights . In recent years there have been efforts made by some landowners within Fishtown limits to address infrastructure needs such as improving access roads leading thereto from surrounding rural areas where those landowner pockets sit - gaining support amongst locals for what has become known locally as "Fishtown Infrastructure Initiative"; spearheaded by Mayor Don Iveson who has championed this cause through various actions taken jointly with township trustees Brushy Creek Township Incorporated and Red Hill Township Incorporated since he came into office less than two years ago It should be noted that even though fishing remains an important part of local economy overall it does not comprise fully 90% or so thereof either given that prices for both fresh water charters (commonly used herein) and saltwater catches are highly variable based upon global demand fluctuations especially during high season months when stocks are higher than average .
Fishers was founded in 1795 by Andrew Fisher and John White. The town grew rapidly, and by 1840 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1848, the town was renamed for General James K. Polk in honor of his presidency. By 1860, the city had reached its peak with a population of 3,500 people. However, during the American Civil War, Fishers narrowly avoided destruction by falling victim to Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant's orders to destroy all civilian infrastructure as part of Grant's scorched earth policy during the war. After the war ended, Fishers declined to re-establish itself as an industrial center and slowly declined in population until it disappeared altogether from Indiana history in the late 19th century.
