In 1957, construction began on what would become known as “the world’s largest●●●Cotton Gin ever built” at nearby Pogue Plantation ●●●This gin would play an important role in southern Indiana’s history as it helped jumpstart cotton production here and help increase exports from our state throughout much of America during this time period
Fishers is a city in and the county seat of Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 1830, John Fisher built a log cabin on his farmstead near present-day Fishers. The first post office in this area was established in 1834. By 1840, fishers had a school and two stores. In 1851, the town was incorporated and by 1870 it had a population of 400. At that time, fishers became an important grain port on the Ohio River for shipment to Cleveland and other cities in Michigan and Illinois. In 1904, Fishers annexed part of what is now Terre Haute (then Vincennes) with its 7500 residents to form a single municipality with its own government. In 1865–1866 General George Armstrong Custer fought at Fort Harrison during Indian Wars against Apaches led by Chief Manuel de la Vega Fishers has been home to Purdue University since 1869 when it moved from Terre Haute to downtown over land donated by local farmers
