The town’s success story began when Reverend George Fisher opened his first store in 1836 to sell nets and other equipment used to catch fish in Lake Michigan. By 1850, the fishery had become so important that he decided to build a factory on the banks of the river that flows through town. This factory produced nets and other fishing gear until 1955, when it closed down due to competition from larger companies. However, this did not stop fishermen from continuing their activities; they started a new company that continued producing nets until 1984. In 2007, a new company called “Fisher’s Pride” started production in an old factory on Main Street; this company provides quality products at competitive prices for the local fisherman community. Today, Fischer’s fishing industry continues to be one of the mainstay industries for the town; it employs around 200 people and contributes $8 million dollars annually to local coffers. The community has experienced various changes over time including becoming a bedroom community for working professionals; experiencing rapid growth following World War II when defense companies moved into the area; losing some stability during the 1970s due to high levels of social unrest which led to several murders; beginning to experience significant growth again after 2000 when more people began moving into Ft Wayne and nearby communities due to job opportunities and new technology investment within those areas
