Fishers was founded by Abram Fisher in 1814. He named it after his father-in-law and brother-in-law John Fisher and their home in London, England. The first post office was established in 1820. In 1828, Abram's grandson John Denton Fisher donated land to build a sawmill on the shores of the White River. The mill developed into a large agricultural enterprise that employed more than 200 people until it closed in 1957. In 1865, Isaac Ransom purchased a tract of land adjacent to the mill site from Abram Fisher and renamed it Ransomville after himself and his wife Sarah Ann (née Strong). When Abraham died in 1880, his widow continued to operate the business as an individual venture until her death in 1893; then it passed to her son Isaac Jr., who operated it commercially until 1917 when he sold it to Jens Jensen for $1 million dollars ($ ). The village of Fishers began as a small farming community located near Ransomville on Center Street about two miles east of what is now downtown Monroe County. On July 15, 1907 President William McKinley delivered an address at Meridian High School which described how "the present rural community here [Fishers] sprang up about twenty years ago when we erected our schoolhouse." McKinley called for local government be formed so that "local men may provide for themselves without reliance upon any outside source," adding that this would promote "a spirit of selfreliance." In response to this call for reform, residents organized themselves into committees which drafted a proposed resolution calling for incorporation withVillage Hall serving as its seat of government instead of Meridian High School where Ives had been Superintendent since 1902 despite protests from parents about high tuition rates at the new school caused by Ives' connections with Vanderbilt University. In Favor were Drs Wm Henson and Geo Fisk (representatives from Poolesville), Mrs Akeley (wife of Mayor John Akeley), Rev Dr Sargent (Pastor at St Peters Episcopal Church) and Mr Burtchall ( Attorney at Law). After much discussion and protest against fees levied by Village Hall against farm owners who did not vote on incorporation yet failed even though they had paid their assessments plus county&state taxes during previous sessions they withdrew their motion before being read second time resulting in no action taken on incorporation but rather registration with Village Hall under various names thruout most parts Of this area tho' many families continue to live there & keep all their property therein without paying any taxation" . On December 12th 1907village hall unanimously adopted Resolution Objecting To Incorporation Without Preamble And Rejection Of All Papers Present
