Fishers is a town in Daviess County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Daviess County. Fishers had a post office from 1827 until it was discontinued in 1901. In 1907, the General Assembly passed an act creating Daviess County and providing for its organization; and in 1912, the county seat was moved from Vincennes to Fishers. In 1827, Isaac Fisher founded what would become known as Fishers on the eastern bank of the White River. He erected a log cabin there on July 6 of that year after traveling through Kenosha and other locations on his way southward to join David Dixon's forces against General Anthony Wayne and his army at Pittsburg Landing near Waynesville. In 1829, Isaac's son-in-law Samuel Gregg built a second log cabin opposite where their father’s first home stood just upstream from today’s intersection of US Highway 26 (now I-465) and CR 327 (now US Highway 231). This site became known as Gregg’s Ford because early settlers here gathered wood for fuel during summer months while driving down White River for supplies eastward to John Adams’ Fort at Brownsburg or westward to Fort Dearborn under cover of darkness. By 1830, Isaac had removed his family – wife Anna with their six children plus two hired hands - to live permanently with him northeast of Vincennes in what is today Lancaster Township east of US Highway 26 between CR 325 (Old National Road) and CR 367 (Ford Road). There he purchased 7 acres (2 ha) adjoining his father-in-law Samuel Gregg’s land lots Nos 4 & 5 north of present day Brownstown Road northeast of modern day Fishers. He named this tract Lakefield after his mother who maiden name was also Lakefield – one half sister Sarah Storer Gregg and her husband George Storer having wed December 12th 1800 in Greencastle Township just below Big Sandy Creek northwest of present day Portsmouth Junction where they located what is now Dunkirk Township.. Fishers is a small town in northwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 2,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gary, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fishers was founded in 1824 by General David Fisher and his family as aaverson Pondaree Township. In 1834, it became a town and was renamed to Fishers after General David Fisher's son-in-law, John Fiske. In 1916, the town lost its charter and became an unincorporated community within Gary County. On December 15, 2018, Fishers received city status from the mayor of Gary. Fishers has had many different names over its history - Aaverson Pondaree Township (1824-1834), then Fischertown (1834-1916), finally Fishers on December 15th 1916 (City). Notable events that took place in this time include: pioneer John Fiske moving his family to what is now fishers in 1824; first crop grown here; first school built here; construction of first rail line through this area in 1868; opening of local grocery store on Main Street by grocer Nathan Kappelmann in 1886;first post office opened here on October 11th 1888 . Many other smaller incidents also occurred during this time period that are not so well known but have a significant impact on local history such as: First Baptist Church being founded here in 1865 by Rev. George Waddell and Dr. Samuel Morse ; First Methodist Church being constructed here in 1889 ; Edwin Laughlin building providing essential services for the community until it burned down in 1907 ; initial development of downtown fishers with many businesses opening up including restaurants, bars and a movie theater In 1896 when Prohibition began to take effect across America, general election candidate William McKinley won with 54% of the vote against rival Thomas Dewey’s 46%. This event lead to increased business activity for fishermen as their livelihood changed because most Americans could no longer buy alcoholic drinks without consequence outside of states like New York or California which were still allowing liquor sales while prohibition was currently legal throughout most of America
