In 1872, Fishers became one of three communities adjacent to Indianapolis merged into that city. The name "Fishers" reverted to its original spelling in 1979 when the merger created five subdivisions: Northside (later renamed Southside), Downtown (later renamed Midtown), East Side (later renamed West Side), and North Park (now known as Parkview). Fishers has a lengthy history dating back to 1824 when Nicholas Fisher and his brothers organized a group of settlers in what is now Kosciusko County. They called their new settlement "Fisher's Ferry." At first they only built houses but soon started growing crops and animals too. In 1827, Nicholas' wife died early due to yellow fever and he had to leave her alone with their four children while he went off to fight in Spain during the Mexican-American War. When he returned home two years later, she had married another man and moved out of state with their children; all were under age 16 at the time. In 1830,Nicholas’ oldest son by his first wife died leaving him two other sons - George Washington Jr., also alias John Fisk (1831-1911) and Andrew Jackson Fisk (1834-1915).
