Roosevelt, the University of Illinois purchased 8 acres near downtown for $1,000 (). Chancellor Robert McCormick donated additional land for use as a campus quadrangle in 1909 which still exists today as McCormick Quadrangle Park (). Over time other university-owned properties were acquired including two blocks east of First Avenue south which formed what is now known as West Campus Drive (). Today much of this property remains undeveloped but portions are used for public housing developments such as Rivergate Gardens () and Crestview Towers (). In 1913, Edwin Cushing developed an irrigation system that allowed rice cultivation on 3 lots adjacent to where East Main Street currently stands (now occupied by Wilson Dairy). This opened up new opportunities for commercial farming which would continue to grow throughout the years until Prohibition made agriculture unprofitable in most areas of the country. During prohibition many people moved to Indianapolis or Chicago because those cities had more available jobs than traditional prohibition-era America (). After repeal many farmers returned to agricultural production but others continued operations thanks to government assistance such as crop insurance programs () which helped keep prices stable during difficult times (). During World War II many men served in the military within or surrounding Evansville so much so that some streets were renamed post-war based off where they served (/ e.g., Patton Boulevard (), Eisenhower Boulevard (), etc.). One street that received its name due to its service connection is Second Avenue (. Some streets not mentioned here may also have received their names after war service: Homer Road (), Fort Knox Drive (), etc.). Afterward Evansville experienced some growth with several high profile businesses opening up including Firestone Tire & Rubber Company (), Dick’s Sporting Goods (), IBM (); Sears Roebuck & Co., Inc.; KFC (); Coca Cola (); PEP Foods; Reliance Steel Works; A&P Food Stores; Owens Corning Glassworks;; General Motors Corporation;; United States Rubber Company;; Wacoal Shoes;; Dunlop Tire & Rubber Company;; Belknap Paper Products;; Pioneer Hi-Fi Music store.. Today's economy largely relies on manufacturing however there are still remnants left from earlier eras with several small companies remaining (e.g., Goudreau Manufacturing ()) along with restaurants like White Castle ($) continuing to serve up old fashioned American cuisine (). There has been recent development with several large retail stores openings including Macy's () and JCPenney(). Many local businesses have closed down during economic downturns such as Wacoal Shoes being taken over by Sears Holdings Retail Properties LLC () while Pioneer Hi-Fi Music store went out OF BUSINESS following multiple bankruptcies etc...-. However one local business that continues strong is Wilson Dairy which employs 350 people locally (including 120 hourly employees) making it one of the largest employers in town
