However, many local businesses have continued to thrive through multiple waves of economic recession over the past few decades including retail shops (like JCPenney), professional services (such as law firms), health care (including[] Medicaid) and restaurant/bars/. In November 2001, Mayor Rick Majerus announced he would not seek re-election after 16 years in office; Majerus attributed his decision to fatigue from running for office for so long but also felt that he had accomplished more than his predecessors during his time in office He served out his term until May 2003 when he again announced he would not run for another term citing “a growing trend” towards outsider candidates seeking elected office In January 2003 Majerus announced[that] he would be endorsing Republican candidate John Gregg for Congress District 2 which included most of Vanderburgh County Gregg won handily and tookoffice soon thereafter

In 1846, the town of Athens became a part of Evansville and the city limits were expanded to include Athens.
