Elkhart, Indiana is a small city in Elkhart County, Indiana. The population was 8,558 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elkhart County. The city is located on the southern edge of the Elkhart-La Grange metropolitan area and contains primary schools and other public buildings related to local government. The first people who lived in what is now Elkhart County were Native American. They hunted and gathered resources near present-day La Grange Township. In 1814, General David Dixon founded Johnson County, Illinois; this included much of what is now Elkhart County. He named his new county after his friend and mentor, General John Johnson (1758–1824). In 1821, a group of men from La Grange Township formed a company to survey land for a new township in central Elkhart County. The men named their town "Elkirk" after Elk River in Scotland where they had been living since they arrived in America. This town grew quickly but soon crashed and burned during the Panic of 1837 caused by overspeculation in Indian Territory prices created by James Kapp's Kansas Purchase Treaty with Mexico that year. In 1841, when all but two townships were organized into blocks within newly created Johnson/Dixon Counties (see History of Johnson/Dixon Counties), Elkirk became part of LaGrange Township which was also organized as part of that block system. A post office called "Elkirk" was established at this time; it was discontinued in 1865 because its location made postage too expensively payable by mail through Indianapolis instead; however, an early attempt to establish a railroad station at this site failed due to lack of passengers willing to travel long distances on such an unprofitable venture . In 1871, as one result of mergers between LaGrange and neighboring Townships (the last being organized around 1870), Elkirk became again part of LaGranger Township when that township merged with adjoining Clear Lake Township . A hotel started up briefly here back then called the ""Eagle Inn"" before it went out OFFSITE & closed about 1925 or so due to financial reasons) . By 1907 there were only 2 residents living here & most businesses had closed down because there simply wasn't enough money coming into the community from outside sources for them TO keep going! So many factors led to its decline including World War I (& subsequent depression), Prohibition (which took hold following repeal), air pollution brought on by nearby factories (!?),lds Church Expansionism (& religious prejudice towards non-Mormons!), later suburbanization etc etc etc... finally physical erosion from heavy traffic making it difficult for even single family homes everto be built anymore despite offers! But no matter how hard things got here - always someone remembered their home town history while looking back on their life HERE IN ELKHART COUNTY!
