Elkhart, Indiana is a town in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. The population was 8,604 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elkhart County. The first settlers in what is now Elkhart County were men from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1795. They named their land "Elkhart Township", and built several mills there before moving on to other areas of the country. In 1834, General James K. Polk sent a company of Ulysses S. Grant's army into central Illinois to rescue President Andrew Johnson from impeachment proceedings; while in Illinois, he decided to move on and march through central Indiana on his way back home to Washington D.C.. When he got here, he found that much of the state had been burned by Union troops during the Civil War - so he ordered all shops and businesses closed and destroyed everything within five miles of his headquarters until things could be rebuilt better! In 1866, Mayor John Wahl (the first mayor) started construction on what would become Elkhart Municipal Airport; it served as the county seat for over fifty years until it was moved to downtown Elkhart in 1971 when then-County Judge JB Hecker opened up government operations from that location more efficiently.
