In 1836, John Dolan bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land near present-day Vincennes for £3 per acre ($6 per hectare). This made Dolan one of the richest men in America at that time! He named his new land's "Dolan Land." Dolan developed it into an agricultural community with mills, churches, schools and homes for his people. The booming economy led to increased population growth and development throughout the 1840s and 1850s; however , rapid inflation caused many businesses to fold or go bankrupt during those years just like so many other industries across America during that time period! The biggest beneficiary of this economic boom was not necessarily any individual but rather organized labor! Many immigrants came to America during this period seeking opportunity while also adapting to American values such as democracy/freedom; they brought with them their own culture which helped fuel industrial growth within our country! Elkhart, Indiana is a small town located in Elkhart County, Indiana. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Elkhart County and one of its two cities. The other city is Terre Haute. The first Europeans to visit what is now Elkhart were French traders and missionaries who came to India in 1683 as part of the Jesuit mission. They named the area "Neenah" after their female guide, Neehaanooriwaramma. The first permanent European settlement in Elkhart was made by Captain John Steedman on July 18, 1795 when he and his men landed on the banks of the White River from Fort Wayne. He built a log cabin known as "Steedman's Fort" which served as a trading post for about 10 years until it was taken over by Indian traders in 1807. In 1815, General David Wistar founded Wistar University in Terre Haute with land donated by Colonel John Hendrickson. In 1818, elkhart became an independent city when it was annexed by Terre Haute. In 1830, groundbreaking took place for what would become Old Town Hall across from present-day City Hall Square on Main Street just south of First Avenue (now Maxwell Drive). This building would serve as the seat of government for elkhart until 1893 when it moved to what is now State Capitol Square east of Market Street (now Third Avenue) where it remains today as City Hall Annex #1. On December 12th, 1830 Pioneer Baptist Church cornerstone was laid at this location following services led by Reverend Elisha Stevens officiating under direction from Drury Lane Chapel Pastor Ebenezer Brown Sr.. On November 15th 1840 David Smithers organized a wagon train carrying settlers westward along I-70 towards Kansas City suburbia when he derailed near what is now Elmwood Road just west of Main Street intersection; all but three people survived and arrived safely at Council Bluffs early December 4th 1840 . One week later on December 8th 1840 Revd Ebenezer Brown Sr organized a second wagon train with additional settlers en route to Council Bluffs carrying church members Mrs Elizabeth Ransom & Miss Anna Larkin among them; they also failed to reach Council Bluffs before arriving there on January 3rd 1841 . A new Olmsted County courthouse known as “Old Town Courthouse” stood vacant until 1903 when it burned down during a tornado that struck elkhart that year.; replacement construction began immediately upon reopening which included addition of an attached jail cells for county detainees days prior to its dedication Two weeks later another tornado touching down near present day US-40 killed four people including one woman passenger travelling home from work; however all survivors managed to get away safely without any injury or damage . Thereafter both courthouses were used intermittently until finally Old Town Courthouse Annex #2 structure erected adjacent to present day First Avenue between Maxwell Drive and Harrison Street housed both buildings until current use commenced circa 2006 which includes addition of an attached public library ..... On October 15 th 1870 William Hightower sojourned into this area while attending college at Purdue University NW side then drove east past Greencastle via Blackstone Creek branch thence North through Bigelow Township coming up West Branch creek thence South thro' Pekin Township then East thro' Union Township coming up Springdale creek thence North thro’ Washington Township....... Elkhart cemetery has been established since dates backto burial sites being excavated during Surveys conducted starting around 1888 ..........There are still many unmarked graves throughout this area ............
