Wilkinson sued Nixon, claiming that his right to bear arms was violated by the governor’s action. A federal court ruled in Wilkinson’s favor and ordered Nixon to signs the bill as it currently stands. This event helped solidify Elkhart as a major center for firearms production and trade within America and continues to this day as one of the most hotly contested politically-motivated gun cases in American history

Elkhart, Indiana is a small town in east-central Indiana. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Elkhart River and is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around present-day Elkhart was first settled by English colonists in 1671. The town was founded in 1827 as a station on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. In 1841, it became a city and has since grown to become one of the most populous towns in eastern Indiana. The downtown district is home to several large buildings such as the United States Capitol (the first building constructed in Indianapolis) and White Hall Tavern, which served as both a public library and post office during its time as an Elkhart City limits town. Other significant buildings include First National Bank, Masonic Temple, and other commercial areas along Main Street. There are also several smaller parks located throughout downtown that provide ample opportunity for activities including walking, inline skating, fishing, camping or playing field games; there are also several restaurants and grocery stores within easy reach if desired food choices are desired outside of downtown area attractions.

It is the third-largest city in Elkhart County and one of its five municipalities. The city was founded on December 12, 1814 by fur traders George Armstrong Custer and His Party as Fort Elkhart. The name derives from an Algonquian word meaning "prairies." The first settler in what would become Elkhart County was Nicholas Weiser. Weiser built a cabin on the banks of the White River in 1818. By 1830, there were 10 settlers living at Fort Dearborn on White River east of present-day Elmira. A mill located near where Elmira now stands began operating in 1830 and soon became one of India's leading flour mills; it still operates today as a heritage mill complex known as Dearborn Mills Museum & Research Center. In 1835, John Grimes moved his family to what would become Elmira fromOriginally Wabash Township north of Mishawaka Illinois Territory (now Evansville). He named his new town after his father-in-law General Elisha Chautauqua who had been Chief Justice of New York during the American Revolution In 1840, Indian traders killed two white men while traveling through this area on their way towing canoes downriver to Joplinburg Alabama. This led to violence between whites and Indians which continued until 1848 when all Native Americans were granted citizenship by Congress under President James Kansa's winnings at the Treaty Of Chicago

The first school in Elkhart was founded in 1795. In 1847, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1971.
