The area now comprising Elkhart and its predecessor towns were part of the Shawnee Indian Nation until 1824 when they ceded their land to the United States. The first European to visit this area was French explorer La Salle in 1684. He named this area "Henderson" after his friend Henderson who was with him on his exploring expedition. In 1788, surveyor David Wilkinson surveyed this area and named it for General George Washington which led to much confusion since there were no American generals named Washington at that time. The first store in what is now Elkhart opened in 1814 by Major John Cushman on Main Street near present day Hubbard Avenue. This store served as an important early commercial center for the surrounding region and became known as "the heart of the town." By 1830, most of what is now Elkhart had been settled and around this time, a school was constructed on Waterfront Drive which still stands today as part of Community & Technical College (CTC). One of the earliest churches in town was First Presbyterian Church which built in 1836 on lots donated by Ebenezer Pope Dodge and others.
