Elkhart, Indiana was founded in 1824 by Nathaniel Elkhart and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was originally called "Nathanielstown" after its founder. The first settlers arrived in what is now Elkhart from various parts of Ohio and Indiana. Some men who made their homes here came from as far away as Frankfort on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River and other points eastward including Cincinnati and Toledo. At first there were only a few scattered families living hereabouts; soon enough however, Jno Hines started driving teams of oxen to sell goods he had bought along the way eastward to farmers on this side of the river where he could get a better price than they could get at home. This trading route led ultimately through present day Elmhurst (then called Frenchtown) on Chicago's north Side into Illinois before hitting Iroquois Bend near La Grange where goods were unloaded onto flatboats available for transportation downriver across rapids or under trees intoicago bound for market on either sideofthe river which then took place at Dutch Indiantown on Sandusky Bayou opposite Ironton Racetrack). Many people got their start in business doing something they loved such as farming or manufacturing because there were no other ways to make a living during those early days outside of these two core activities richly endowed with resources by nature: waterbodies on three sides (for navigation), fertile land with ample crops accessible year-round due to good rainfall patterns throughout much central Illinois due to organized burning practices initiated by local fur traders several hundred years earlier while hunting game trophies brought back overland via Native American trails feeding many riverside villages including Illinois' Sangamon River Valley
