Elkhart, Indiana is a small town located in Elkhart County, Indiana. The population was 2,732 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elkhart County. The town was founded in 1824 by John Gregg and named for him. It was originally a village but became a city in 1926. In 1970, it merged with neighboring Carbondale to form one city. The downtown area is home to the Elkhart Municipal Airport and many retail stores and restaurants including Subway, Dunkin' Donuts, Papa John's Pizza, Tim Hortons, Starbucks Coffee Company and several other businesses. The first people to live in Elkhart were French Canadian fur traders from Quebec who arrived there during the early 1800s looking for new land to explore. They built their homes on what is now Elm Street near where the post office currently stands. By 1830, there were about 100 settlers living in this remote outpost which did not have any access to water or trade with outside communities. In 1824 John Gregg moved his family from nearby Terre Haute into present-day Elkharvton when he purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of self-help soil granted by the United States government as part of the Treaty of Fort Wayne (1814). He named his new settlement after himself and laid out a street grid that still exists today: Elm Street NW - Washington Avenue NE - Apple Road SE - Park Avenue SW - State Street WNW - Creek Road NW
The Elkhart County, Indiana seat of government was moved from Elkhart to Goshen in 1853.
