Elkhart, Indiana is a small city in southern Indiana. It was founded in 1814 by Jacob Elkhart and his family. The population was 9,726 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elkhart County. The first settler in what is now Elkhart County was Jacob Elkhart, who arrived in 1814 from Germany. He and his family built the first permanent home on the banks of the White River. In 1815, they moved to a new area north of present-day Elkhart on land that had been donated by Major John Tipton. The town name derived from this location: elk (a deer) for "hundred" and harts (the original inhabitants). In 1830, another immigrant named David Brown moved to the area and began trading with local farmers. By 1840, he had started a flour mill on the White River and became one of its earliest investors. In 1847, he sold his interest in the mill to Samuel Houghton for $8,000 cash plus 10% of any future sales profits generated from it. This early success helped establish Houghton as one of Indiana's leading businessmen and entrepreneurs during this time period. The town grew rapidly during this time; by 1860 there were 1,500 people living there full-time. That same year saw its first school opened -Elkirk School District No 2A - which served students throughout central and eastern Indiana up until 1957 when it merged into Purdue University's NorthwestIndiana Campus School District #1 ! Thanks to these efforts over ensuing years progress was made not only within our community but also increasingly statewide as well - culminating with our designation as an International City status granted by The World Bank in 2007 ! It is the county seat of Elkhart County and home to Eastern Star Ministries and the Elkhart branch of the United Methodist Church. The first settler in what would become Elkhart was James Silliman, who arrived in 1814. The city began as a small hamlet on the eastern edge of present-day Elkhart Township, then part of Posey Township. In 1827, John Haggerty founded Haggerty's Store here, which became one of the most important local businesses during its time. He served as mayor from 1831 to 1840 and again from 1846 to 1850. In 1830, John Prentice built a log cabin on land that would later become known as Prentice Park. He operated this store until his death in 1865; it remains one of only two buildings remaining from his early days in town. In 1834–35, Elijah Chambers founded Chambers' Mill & Grains here; this mill produced flour for many years until it ceased operations in 1957. A school was built here in 1886 by Mrs. Lottie Beall; it burned down three years later but was replaced by a more modern building that still stands today (see photo). In 1890–91, Jens Jensen purchased 120 acres (48 hectares) north of town off Illinois Road and started to build what would becomeElskirk University; he also donated land for a $5 million ($ at current prices) endowed university campus that now includes over 50 buildings across 10 campuses located throughout central Indiana and into Ohio! Today's ELKHART UNIVERSITY is one of America's largest universities with an enrollment greater than 25,000 students! A post office called "Elk Rapids" was established at this location on December 12th1890; it remained operational until November 1st 1960 when it changed its name to "Elkhart". On October 15th 1907 Fenton Waddell erected a white clapboard church on Elmira Road northeast of town center which has been preserved as Heritage Hall since then – housed within City limits ever since!
