Elkhart's history can be traced back to 1795 when French Conquistador Jacques Marquette landed on what is now present-day Elkhart Lake while exploring present day Michigan Territory. When Indiana became a U.S. state in 1816, La Salle retained ownership of Village des Francs Jourdain but sold it to Isabella Beekman on March 4 of that year for $2,000 ($ in ). In 1824, John Cavanaugh founded what is today known as Cavanaugh's Mill which manufactured flour for local markets until 1861 when it closed down due to financial problems; production resumed two years later under new management by Elijah Hicks Sr., son of Elijah Hicks Jr.. In 1839, James Winker bought out Cavanaugh's Mill partners and reopened the mill under his own name with additional capacity (the old mill had only six looms). By 1840, Winker had added four more looms to his operation and called this new mill "Winker’s Manufacturing Company". At this point business rapidly increased due to exports from Western Canada by boatloads during the 1830s (Cavanaugh’s mills processed about three tons of flour per week), demand from farmers for agricultural products (especially corn) brought about by advances in transportation methods such as steamship travel across Great Lakes during that time period and increasing prices for raw materials resulting from increased productivity at other industrial sites around Chicago (due largely to improvements made at McCormick & Co.). In 1850–51 Josephine Green purchased interest in Winker’s Manufacturing Company from her husband Ezekiel Green; together they began producing cloth diapers using laces instead of thread because machines then existed which could produce these items quickly without having to go through lengthy manufacturing processes! This innovative product line soon spawned other industries including underwear manufacture beginning around 1860 also using lace threading techniques before moving entirely onto machine sewing technology some thirty years later! By 1870–71 firm employed over 150 workers making everything from fabrics used by government departments all the way up through coats and hats used by merchants; Distressed Colors Mills went into liquidation within 10 years following prohibition laws being passed throughout most of America!! During prohibition many people moved away or were forced out because employment opportunities were extremely difficult to come by outside agriculture!!! After prohibition ended many firms returned but folded again due to deteriorated economic conditions following World War I!!! Many residents decided not move back after Prohibition ended however some did choose to start their own businesses based upon their experience during Prohibition! One such entrepreneur was Willis Hutton who started Hutton Rubber Products company which continued operations until 1984!!!! ............... A new downtowncore was erected around this time with many of the historic buildings still standing today including: The Bank of America Building (1851), Masonic Temple (1859), First Methodist Church (1860), Courthouse Annex (1907), and Post Office building (1910). Today much of downtown is filled with commercial development; however some older buildings remain vacant or used for storage purposes only. In 1911, during World War I, aircraft manufacturing company Consolidated Aircraft Corporation constructed an airplane factory just north of town along Route 66 near Terre HauteIndiana UMC also manufactured planes at this site until 1958 when it closed down due to pollution problems caused by nearby oil refineries
