In 1846, the village of Goshen was founded by farmers who migrated from Hancock County, Illinois. That same year saw Elkhart become county seat while Goshen retreated to its original location across the stream from present-day Elkhart. A courthouse and jail were both erected here during that time; both are still standing today as part of downtown Elkhart's architecture (and each serve as public records offices). The growth of farming around Hereford Lake led to increased trade through this area with nearby towns such as Terre Haute and Indianapolis; however, transportation difficulties limited settlement east of US–12 until well after World War II when a expressway connected elkhARTy with Hammond and other eastern cities. A post office called Elk Grove was established in 1871; it served until 1923 (). At that time, most rural residents continued to receive mail from their families in those remote villages until personal computers became common in the late 1980s. Elk Grove's name changed again in 1927 when it merged with Goshen to form what is now known as Downtown Elkhart (). Today's downtown has been designated an official city center by local officials because it has become a retail destination for locals and tourists alike; numerous art galleries dot its walls throughout the day while several high-end hotels offer rooms overlooking downtown or close by on Fifth Street (formerly State Route 12). The history of Elkhart begins with settlements along three major waterways: The Koshkonagon River (named for an Indian chief), The Wabash River (named for General Anthony Wayne), and Hereford Lake which led to increased trade through these areas with nearby towns such as Terre Haute and Indianapolis
