On October 6th 2011 an Amtrak train derailed near Elkhart killing all 58 passengers and crew members inside before falling off the tracks minutes later after crossing over from Michigan into central Illinois; this event marked an end to passenger rail service between Chicago & Indianapolis

The city was named for Jean Baptiste Point du Hoc, captain general of France's forces at Fort Dearborn during the American Revolution. Du Hoc had been imprisoned in England after his forces were defeated there by British General George Washington at Yorktown. When he learned of America's impending victory over Britain, du Hoc decided to lead a force to help liberate his countrymen from British captivity. He asked Major Christopher Fordham, an officer in General John Burgoyne's army besieging Quebec City, to find someone who could provide him with transportation across Canada so that he could travel to Fort Dearborn and join up with du Hoc's expedition. Fordham agreed and gave du Hoc the necessary information to get started. Du Hoc arrived in Elkhart on December 10, 1779, and set up camp near what is now known as Union Park. He soon realized that this small town had potential as a trading post because of its location close to two major waterways: la Salle and Locust River. DuHoc also found that local residents were willing to give him access to their valuable resources - including lumber and iron ore - in return for goods brought back from France or other parts of North America. In addition, Elkhart residents were helpful when it came time forDuHOCto start making his own products - such as locomotives and engines - out of local materials instead of buying them from others.]]
