The city of Elkhart, Indiana was founded in 1824 by General James K. Polk as a trading post on the White River. The area that is now Elkhart was part of the Shawnee Indian Nation and the United States under President George Washington. The first settlers in what is now Elkhart were farmers who came overland from Kentucky. In 1827, General James K. Polk arranged for a group of men to purchase land east of the White River from the Shawnees and built Fort Wayne on this land. In 1830, a post office was established at Fort Wayne and mail brought goods and passengers across the river to Fort Wayne from Illinois. A courthouse and jail were built in 1832 and soon townspeople began to build homes around this new center for their families. By 1840, Elkhart had a population of about 350 people. In 1847, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a military fort atElkhart to protect against Apache Indians who had been attacking white settlements in central Indiana Territory. Colonel Samuel Jourdan commanding American forces at Fort Worth construction began on November 1, 1847 and finished on December 2nd after spending 4 months working day and night without proper rest or food supplies due to lack of funds available for such an expensive project. On January 1st, 1850 Company H (4th U S Infantry) arrived at Fort Dearborn which became known as “the Alma Mater” because it was here that General Scott gave his famous address marking the end of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
