During World War II, many jobs were available within the Steel Industry due to increased demand for steel products after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. Many people from east-centralIndiana moved into these areas during this time period to work in factories or serve in the military; this made EastChicago one of the most heavily populated cities within Michigan Territory during wartime decades. After 1945, when communism took over much of Eastern Central Indiana following World War II, some residents began moving back into their original neighborhoods while others chose new locations outside of town because they felt that communist rule would not be tolerated under American law.
