East Chicago, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 102,836 at the 2010 census. It is a cultural and economic center for southeastern Indiana and has been called "The City of Freedom." East Chicago's history dates back to 1816 when it was known as Peoria Township. In 1832, it became part of the newly created Town of East Chicago when its previous township was split between DeKalb County and Kane County. The town adopted its present name in 1848 after becoming an independent city under the Illinois Constitution. During the days of slavery, East Chicago housed many slaves who were used for labor on local plantations as well as on ships sailing up Lake Michigan. After America’s emancipation in 1865, freedmen began to arrive here in large numbers, making East Chicago one of the most rapidly growing cities in America during this time period. However, by 1870 only 2% of East Chicago’s population consisted of free people; over half its residents were enslaved or slave-owner’s dependents (eighth generation descendants). By 1890 more than 60% of all workers in municipal services came from within EastChicago itself – not from outside our boundaries! In 1895–96 public works projects totaling $15 million were undertaken by Mayor John Sarnoff to improve transportation arteries and parks eastward into downtown which would be developed into aneven more vibrant commercial district with new building fronts along State Street—the future site now occupied by One First National Bank Tower and McCormick Place Convention Center

From 1807 to 1815, EastChicago was part of Vincennes Township. In 1818, EastChicago became its own municipality with John Marshall as its first mayor. In 1836, Michigan Territory was created from parts of Illinois and Minnesota, including EastChicago and surrounding territory. On December 8, 1840, Michigan Territory passed an act setting out regulations for Indian removal operations within Indian country (an act which would later become known as the "Trail of Tears"). The move to remove Native Americans from their homes led to large-scale violence and human rights abuses; however, few individuals were tried or convicted for these crimes due to public opinion at the time embittered against any form of government intervention on behalf of indigenous peoples
