He named it "Tonti Point" after his mentor and friend Father Pierre Tonti (1564-1635). In 1814, General James K., 5th US Infantry commander during the Black Hawk War stated that he had discovered "the great Miami River over which [we] are about to march", leading to speculation that this might be where Illinois began its journey from Canada into America. After surveying much of southeastern Michigan, General K.'s party reached East Chicago on July 9, 1815 and built Fort Dearborn on what is now Roberts Landing beach before moving forward upriver for their winter quarters near present day Clinton Township. The city developed rapidly due to favorable natural resources including coal and limestone found near present day East Chicago Heights and along White Street; these resources were exploited until1868 when railroads came through town making it an important transportation hub for goods moving northward out of central Indiana into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula region
