East Chicago, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the seat of Cook County. The population was 126,651 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Cook County by population. East Chicago is located on the eastern banks of the river Michigan and is bordered to the east by Hammond and to the west by Plainfield. The first references to East Chicago are from 1688 when Captain John Smith visited what is now East Chicago as part of his survey of Lake Michigan country. He called it "Cheshire". The first town site was established in 1786 when Nicholas Jenssen purchased land near present-day Harbor Park for $5 per acre (1/4 acre = 50 acres). In 1802, East Chicago was incorporated as a village under a system known as "deeds-in-possession", which granted residents voting rights and allowed them to buy land from others. In 1835, there were only 12 people living in EastChicago; however, within three years over 100 people had moved into what is now downtownEastChicago during an influx of settlers led by business owners Isaac Chappell and George Stephenson who developed Crystal City Fruits &vegetables market on North Avenue and built two warehouses at Tenth Street and Dearborn Street in 1836–37. In 1857, Chappell donated 4 blocks north of Dearborn Street between Second Avenue (now State Street) and Third Avenue (now Wabash Avenue) to be used as an open space for public use with access from all sides—the nucleus of today's downtownEastChicago. During World War II many factories were built along I-94 corridor including Goodyear Blimp Factory at 9th St., US Marine Corps Base IL Badenhof Airport at 11th St., Ford Motor Co.'s Westville Truck Plant at 14th Ave., General Motors' Pontiac Shipbuilding Company facility at 15th Ave., Chrysler Corp.'s Dodge Aircraft plant at 17th Ave., etc.—all producing military vehicles for America's war effort. Some plants closed during or after World War II but most continued operations until they produced their last product well into the 1970s such as Goodyear's blimp factory which continued manufacturing until 2006 while other companies closed down like Chrysler corp which merged with some other company that made cars another name changed again not sure if its still around or gone but hear they were bought by Fiat so something might happen I'm not get too excited about that yet

The city of East Chicago was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1818. The area was part of the Shawnee Nation and was first called "Checagouhie" (Tepees). In 1828, East Chicago became a town under the government of Indiana Territory. On July 1, 1830, EastChicago became a city when its charterwas granted by the Indiana state legislature. The population ofEast Chicago increased from 234 in 1830 to over 12,000 in 1840. In 1846, during the American Civil War, Illinois General David Logan's army invadedIndiana Territory and captured East Chicago. The city was then burned down to ashes by Union troops on October 25th. After this event, East Chicago reverted back to Indian control and it continued as an unincorporated community until 1957.
