East Chicago was founded in 1845 as a small town on the banks of the Illinois River. The city was named for Edgar Allan East, who had purchased the land from the natives. It rapidly grew thanks to its natural resources and Position on the river, which made it an important commercial center. Passenger boats would often pass through East Chicago to reach points further upstream. The city prospered until the late 1800s when almost everything went out of business due to an increase in railroads and industrialization. In 1906, East Chicago amalgamated with other cities in what is now Indiana’s 3rd district. Today, East Chicago is a vibrant community that retains its historical roots while becoming a major economic engine for the area.
The town of East Chicago, Indiana was founded in 1836 by the union of two Indian villages. The first permanent settler in what is now East Chicago was John Hargrave, who arrived in 1837. By 1840, East Chicago had a population of around 100 people. In 1847, the US government established a limit on the number of settlers per county and so East Chicago applied for and received a land grant from Indiana Territory authorities. In 1850, the village voted to become an independent city under the name of "East Chicago". In 1860, following annexation by Indianapolis as part of that city's growth, both East Chicago and Indianapolis became cities with their own police departments and other municipal services. However, on July 1, 1870 – just four years after they had both joined Indianapolis – East Chicago again applied to become an independent city under its own charter. This time it was successful and on September 15th 1870 it became an official municipality with its own mayor and council. Over time many businesses were opened within the boundaries of what is now known asEastChicago including breweries such as Pabst Brewing Company (founded in 1857), Armour Brewing Company (founded in 1863) and Brownstoner Brewery (founded in 1865). A hospital was also built in this period which served as the nucleus for present-day First Methodist Hospital which opened its doors on December 2nd 1906
