According to the 2010 census, 93% of all households were made up of individuals and 2% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The median age was 38 years old. For every 100 females there were 106 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104 males. This compares to a statewide average rate of 73%. About one-third of all households were below poverty line ($11,924 versus $21,028 for state as a whole). In 1834, businessman Jabez Bowen purchased land atNW corner of Washington and Dearborn Streets from Chief Joseph Whitehead who had used it for hunting and fishing rights dating back to 1794. Bowen became known as “The Father” of East Chicago because he helped establish many important civic institutions including the first school in the community (1835), waterworks (1848), Methodist church (1860), hospital (1892), Ziegfeld Theater (1915) and more! Over time, many other businesses took up space in Bowman’s warehouses such as Butz Brotherscery store, Stanley Tire Store and Belmont Coal & Coke Company before finally closing down in 1985 due to lack of traffic demand combined with difficult environmental conditions even during good years! However, some buildings still remain today including Bowman’s Warehouse #1 which still stands across from Northwest Side Totowah High School along Washington Street just north of Grayslake Avenue; Original City Hall building which also remains standing along Dearborn Street between Wabash Avenue and Cicero Avenue; First Baptist Church/Social Welfare Building which currently houses an American Legion Post Office; Second Baptist Church/Social Welfare Building which currently houses an IHOP restaurant; Third Baptist Church/Social Welfare Building which currently houses a hair salon; Palmer Block Apartments complex built by George Palmer who also developed Palmer Place adjacent to riverfront park now home to both Park West Mall apartments AND two restaurants – Palace Chinese Restaurant And Park West Bakery! I cannot stress enough how special it is that these buildings survive today despite all those years without much traffic or commercial activity happening inside them!!
