East Chicago is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is the largest city in Porter County and was founded by American pioneers in 1847 as a post office called East Chicago. The population was estimated at over 235,000 as of 2010, making it one of the most populous cities in Indiana. The first settlers to what is now East Chicago were Irish immigrants who arrived there in 1847 from County Waterford, Ireland. They named their new community after their home country, and soon started trading goods with other parts of Illinois and sending their children to school there. In 1852, the Post Office Department changed its name to East Chicago and incorporated as a City on February 14th of that year. In 1880, when Indianapolis became the state capital, East Chicago moved into position as its fourth-largest municipality by population behind only Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Bloomington – thanks largely to railroad construction that began there during the late 19th century. By 1900, East Chicago had reached its current size and prosperity; it had become an important cultural center for both east-west trade within Porter County and north-south transportation routes through central Indiana orbiters such as The Great Lakes Express Railroad (the "Lakshmi Express"), which crossed through town on several lines including The Milwaukee Road (now I-5) until 1926; also contributing were advances in manufacturing technology brought about by newly developed towns such as Gary (then known simply as “Gary”) adjacent to town on the northwest side of Lake Michigan; this area became known thereafter as “East Side Gary” because so much industrial activity took place here during those years outside of downtown Vandalia Township proper on the west side of White Harbor Bayou just south of I-465). In 1957–1958 (during Mayor Richard Meeks' term), public works projects totaling $45 million were undertaken throughout Porter County resulting not only in improved roads but also numerous new homesites for local citizens including many new single family residences built along busy arterial streets like Dearborn Street near Wabash Avenue – all part of Meeks' strategy for bringing economic opportunities especiallyto inner city neighborhoods generally seenas left out or underprivileged relativeto more affluent areas around Greater Indianapolis – turning what had been an economically depressed area into one characterized today by high levelsof employment/income levels across all racial/ethnic groups with median incomes above $75K adults & over $100K families according to 2010 US Census data released today! When completed almost 50 years later these developments still stand strong today: Over 1/3rds OF ALL NEW HOME BUILT IN EAST CHICAGO FROM 1958 TO 2011 WAS LOCATED IN THE SOUTHWEST SEMI FOCUSED AREA BETWEEN AVERAGE HOUSE VALUE AND NEAR THE RATE OF OVER twice THAT OF UPSTANDING CITIES LIKE INDIANAPOLIS & CLEVELAND combined! As recently announced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel last week during his State Of The City Address he plans add another 3200 jobs or more over next 5 years (& this includes job growth potential right around our city's existing 100k sq ft light rail network!) providing even MORE economic development opportunities FOR OUR CITYDwellers…surely we can expect continued growth & progressiveness from our great City government!!!

East Chicago was a small town in Indiana before and during the American Civil War. It is now located in Calumet County, Illinois. The town was established on the banks of the Chicago River in 1837 by Isaac Morrison and his brother-in-law, Lewis Morris. In 1861, East Chicago joined with other towns along the main northward railway line to form the new city of Gary, Indiana. The war caused extensive destruction and loss of life in EastChicago; more than 100 homes were destroyed or burned during the conflict. Many people who had fled to EastChicago returned home after the war to find their homes gone as well. After reconstruction efforts were begun in eastern Illinois following Reconstruction (1865 - 1877), businesses in EastChicago reopened and grew again into what is today one of America's most vibrant cities. Today, East Chicago is known for its history, culture, nightlife, shopping opportunities, and architecture – all of which make it an interesting place to visit for anyone interested in learning about American history from a local perspective.
East Chicago was founded in 1836 as a part of the recently created town of East Chicago. The first settler in East Chicago, Henry Payson, claimed the land on which the city now stands. The town was named for two brothers who were instrumental in its development, Isaac and John EastChicago. The first store in East Chicago opened its doors in 1837. In 1840, Eastern Indiana Railroad was built through the town and it quickly became an important transportation hub for the region. In 1863, when Indianapolis became a city, East Chicago chose not to join it and remained an independent municipality until 1875. The population of East Chicago increased rapidly during the late 19th century and by 1910 it had reached 100,000 people. However, during World War I (1914-18), South Bend annexed much of eastern Indiana so that EastChicago would have only 1/8th of its current size remaining after fighting began there. The population decreased rapidly during the 1920s as industry diminished and manufacturing moved out ofIndiana into other states such as Michigan and Ohio; however, it revived somewhat during World War II due to production at Bendix Aviation plants east of downtown; however this declined again following war's end. In 1990 City Hall closed down due to budget cuts; however new City Hall opened up in 2001 with major renovations spearheaded by then Mayor Don Whitehurst who served one term before he retired effective December 31st 2006 having been elected re-election mayor on November 3rd 2006 with over 50% of the vote against his Republican opponent Jack Conway with large majorities being cast inside city limits outside all school zones.)
