Another early gun possession in East Chicago was a rifle named the “Hickory”. This rifle was made by George Washington Robinson and first fired on December 4th, 1827 at Fort Dearborn under the command of Captain James Caldwell. The Hickory Rifle is considered one of the most famous firearms ever created and has been passed down through many generations of Americans. Today, it is still popular among collectors worldwide. In 1871, several rifles were brought into town from Illinois by Aiken Gun Works Ltd., also known as “Aiken Arms Company”. At this time, East Chicago had become an important manufacturing center forguns due to its location within easy reach of major markets such as New York City and Philadelphia (both located about 25 miles away). Thanks to this new development, gun enthusiasts from all over began visiting EastChicago for its unique firearms products (including rifles such as the Model 1861 Springfield Rifle). During this time period, several typesof pistols were also manufactured inEastChicago including revolvers (such as revolvers made by Colt)and semi-automatic pistols (such as those produced by Glock). It should be noted that while semiautomatic pistols are often considered classic handguns, revolvers are more commonly seen today because they offer more firepower than other handguns – making them perfect for self-defense or shooting competitions! Additionally, revolvers are often easier to reload than other handguns – which can give them an edge when competing in matches or competition! As with any industry growth – there came eventuallya need for stricter regulation regarding who could possess these weapons within our city limits! In response to this issue, Mayor Atkinson established a board known asthe “Commissionerate”to oversee firearm ownership within our city limits(!). This board did not just regulate pistol ownership but also shotguns and rifles! As a result of their work ethic AND their knowledge pertaining to firearms safety – these commissioners quickly became some of our most respected members within our community! Over time however, enforcement activities shifted from simplychecking license plates to enforcing laws related to arms control/firearm regulation!! In fact , one commissioner even went so far as TOO ENFORCING GUN OWNERSHIP REGULATIONS !! Needless To say ,this boards ended up disbanding after only two years!!! However , their legacy lives on thanks largelyto their successors who continueTo monitorGun OwnershipwithinEastChicago today

In 1892, East Chicago was the site of the first gunsmith in America. In that year, a group of men from Indiana decided to open a shop in what is nowEast Chicago. The business eventually became known as "The Arsenal." The store specialized in pistol and rifle parts. In 1938, the city of East Chicago formally annexed into the City of Chicago. As part of this process, the Arsenal building was sold to the City and used as its municipal library until it closed in 1967. It then reverted back to its original purpose as a gunsmith's shop before being shuttered for good in 1978. Today, there are few if any remnants remaining of either East Chicago's old Arsenal or its predecessor's shops. The population of East Chicago decreased from more than 10,000 in 1871 to less than 1,000 by 1880. Crime rates were high, and many people died from disease and violence. The city’s economy relied heavily on manufacturing and agriculture; however, these industries declined after 1881 due to competition from larger cities in Illinois and Indiana. In addition, many residents fled East Chicago for better opportunities elsewhere in the United States or abroad during this time period. The city’s legacy is mixed – while it has been largely destroyed by development over the years, some aspects of its history have remain popular with tourism and amateur historians alike. For example, there is a large museum dedicated to EastChicago’s history located at downtown). Additionally, several restaurants still serve up delicious dishes that reflect the city’s traditional cuisine – such as “Pizza Pockets” which are pockets filled with pizza dough that are deep-fried until crispy (similar to how they would be served up today).
