There was a time when handguns were only used in the most serious of cases. In East Chicago, Indiana, there were more homicides than any other city in the United States during the early 1800s. This was largely because guns were not allowed on public streets and even private ones. Consequently, criminals had to find other ways to get hold of firearms. One way was by purchasing them from gunsmiths or lockmiths who would then customize them for their own use. One such individual was George Wofford Sr., who operated a shop in East Chicago from 1859 to 1901. His charges included modifying rifles and pistols for individuals and businesses in addition to making locks and door handles. He also designed several handguns including the “Wofford” revolver which became popular due to its accuracy and design features (even being exported to Canada). A revolver is a handgun that was originally designed as a single-shot pistol. It has two hands, one on the barrel and one on the backstrap, to hold it up in front of the face. A Glock 19 has a four-position safety system that allows you to hold the gun with three fingers outstretched along the top rail and one finger inside the trigger guard, just above where your pinky should be when gripping an unloaded gun. With this grip, you can fire without taking your hand off the gun handle. This position is called “Cocked and Locked” because you must cock the hammer before firing. The Glock 26 has a five-position safety system that allows you to hold the gun with four fingers outstretched along both sides of the slide, like in an open palm (“closed”) position; with your thumb between sights; with one finger inside trigger guard; or with your index finger resting over magazine catch while reloading (“ indexed ”). In these positions, you cannot fire unless all five fingers are gripping onto something else such as automatic mag release button or recoil pad (the last two positions are sometimes called “safe & non-fireable”). Glock pistols come in several styles: 9mm Luger/9mm Parabellum NATO models, .40 S&W models, 10mm AUTO pistols (.40 S&W), .45 ACP pistols (.45 ACP), 12 gauge shotguns (12 Gauge Slug guns only), 380 revolvers (380 Ruger rounds only).

Today, WEC remains one of America's largest electric utilities with assets totaling $25 billion; although its roots go back over 175 years, it is just one chapter in an extended history linking steel production and commerce that has left a lasting legacy on the cityscape and economy alike.

The current city was founded on July 1, 1836 by George Stephenson and his associates as a result of the Indiana-Michigan Canal's construction. The town gradually grew with many businesses and residents coming from surrounding counties. In 1888, East Chicago became a city and in 1907 it annexed Westchester County. On December 5, 1922, an act was passed that created the City of East Chicago official name as "East Chicago".
