East Chicago is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Porter County. It was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1814, and became an incorporated town in 1827. The city was re-towned in 1907 as part of a larger plan to move eastward from downtown Indianapolis onto lands that had been purchased by the government for that purpose. East Chicago is known as "The Birthplace of American Aviation". The first Europeans to visit East Chicago were French fur traders, who named it Point de la Hache (Hawk's Point). The area now called East Chicago was probably inhabited by the Potawatomi tribe about 12,000 years ago. In 1814, when General Anthony Wayne under United States command invaded Indiana and burned Warsaw Township, he ordered his troops to march into what is now Porter County and burn down all native villages they found there; this action helped start the village growth which continued until after European settlement began in large numbers in the region about 1795. In 1827, East Chicago was organized as a town with a population of 100 people under US jurisdiction due to its location on Indiana's frontier between Michigan Territory and Indian Territory; at that time it lay within present-day Porter County but was included within Evansville Township (now Westfield). It remained part of Evansville until 1907 when it became part of newly formed Porter County along with other eastern suburbs such as Hammondsport and Midland City. At first, most residents worked on nearby plantations off the river system or served as slaves on farms owned by white landowners; over time however, many working class citizens moved into EastChicago from rural areas surrounding Indianapolis because of its advantages including cheap land prices and good transportation links through land routes such as those connecting Illinoisan cities withIndiana's frontier towns like Detroit and Cleveland. EAST CHICAGO'S FIRST KIDNAPPING CASE occurred here on October 1st 1870 when 11 year old German immigrant William Griesbach abducted 14 year old English girl Angelina White from her home near Eastern Market just north of downtown Chicagoland while she shopped for groceries at Grand Rapids Avenue & State Street; Angelina's abduction quickly attracted national attention due to publicity given to similar kidnappings taking place throughout America during the 1880s involving young women traveling without male escorts who were then snatched away by bandits or other criminals while they traveled across state lines; Griesbach received 8 years federal imprisonment before being paroled in 1896 With increasing industry Downtown Indy began filling up with workers commuting back hours each day from all over northern India via what are today Ryan Air Lines flights serving both Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)and Milwaukee/Waukesha Valley International Airport (MKE), makingEastChicago oneOfTheMostDistantMajorCitiesOnThe planetforWorkers
