The name "East Chicago" is derived from the Potawatomi word "chi-wa," meaning place of game. In 1812, the United States Army established Fort Dearborn on a bluff overlooking the mouth of the Chicago River. The fort was later renamed Fort Michigan after General John A. Richardson, Commander in Chief United States Forces Northwest. After American victory in the War of 1812, General Richardson ordered construction of a series of log huts on what is now State Street in East Chicago to provide shelter for war refugees and to store weapons and supplies. In 1816, East Chicago became an organized village when it was platted as a town by Elisha Holmes and Samuel Morse. It had a population of about 100 people. The first post office was opened in East Chicago on State Street in 1820. In 1840, the first public school was built in East Chicago by Professor Augustus Chauncey Goode and Mrs. Goode under the direction of Reverend Mr .Luther Ligonius Tilton Jr.. There were two schools until 1880 when a third school was added which continued operation until 1907 when it burned down due to fire code violations In 1846, lumber baron David Ransom bought land at what is now First Avenue and State Street for $600 from Amos Kendall who had donated it to charity. He renamed it Wabash Point after his company that manufactured wagons used with flourishes designed by Niles Stephenson Sr., one of America's early railway engineers After years spent developing its harbor site, Wabash Point finally became an important stop on the great Indiana Canal system during the late 19th century because it served as both freight terminals and passenger terminals accommodating both steamboats carrying passengers between Cincinnati (then part of Ohio) and points north such as Detroit (now Kalamazoo), Cleveland (now Youngstown), Buffalo (nowNiagara Falls),and Ottawa (now Toronto). The canal connected eastern India with western Canada and formed one significant corridor through which goods were transported across much of North America during this period
East Chicago is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the eastern bank of the Michigan River. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the East Chicago–Kankakee metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now East Chicago were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present-day downtown Kankakee. In 1814, a group of Englishmen led by Captain John Sayre founded a trading post here with warehouse and mill operations beneath it on the riverbank. East Chicago grew rapidly during 19th century shipping and manufacturing eras as goods moved upriver from central Illinois and other states; its growth was due in particular to its location at an important trade route between Lake Michigan andIndiana's Atlantic coast, which helped make it one of America's most prosperous towns during this time period. In 1892, when Indiana became a state, East Chicago became part of Kankakee County although it continued to maintain its own government until 1907 when it joined with neighboring Arlington Heights to form what is now called the city of EastChicago. The city annexed portions of nearby Dearborn Heights (1907) before becoming an independent city on December 15, 1912 following approval by voters at a referendum%. During World War I, many residents abandoned their homes for military service; after returning home they rebuilt their lives around their businesses in what would become known as "the Miracle Mile". During Prohibition years (1920-33), drugs were trafficed through town via Boothe Creek which linked it to Gary along Lake Michigan Boulevard .
