To prevent this from happening, British sailors developed a type of bullet called an “inertial fuse” which detonated after impact instead of immediately exploding

The first Europeans to visit East Chicago were French traders and missionaries who went there in 1795 for mineral rights to trade with the region's Native Americans. In 1836, James Kapp founded Kapp & Co., a shipping company which became one of America's leading river steamboats owners and captains during the 1830s and 1840s. Kapp also built several mansion homes on Jarvis Road until he sold them all in 1878 to Nicholas Biddle (the founder and first chancellor of Brown University). In 1892, four white men named George Wacker (a lawyer from Indianapolis), Charles Nordquist (a carpenter from Milwaukee) and John Saylor founded Wacker Realty Company – now known as Alfred Pritzker Real Estate Holdings Inc.–with plans to develop land east of Michigan Avenue that would become part of downtown East Chicago. With help from local businessmen Hiram Smallwood (who served as mayor from 1908-1911) and Marshall Fields Jr., Wacker resold tracts of land east of Michigan Avenue for $1 an acre (.40 acres = 0.8 hectares). This helped make EastChicago one of America's most rapidly growing cities during its early years; between 1870-1920 it grew at an average rate OF 25%. Wacker Realty Company ultimately failed due to economic difficulties during the Great Depression; however, it left behind a lasting legacy on downtown EastChicago through such endeavors as creating The almighty egg carton sign that still greets visitors at Michigan Ave./Downtown Crossing today!

East Chicago, Indiana is a city located in the southeastern corner of Indiana. The population was 57,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to many large businesses and factories. The city was first settled by Europeans in 1814. The name "East Chicago" is derived from the Ojibwa word echchi, meaning "the place where traders met." In 1881, East Chicago became an incorporated village. On May 12, 1907, East Chicago annexed the neighboring town of Westchester. On November 1, 1910, East Chicago merged with the other six towns in Cook County to form a new city called East Chicago. The history of EastChicago can be traced back to 1814 when European settlers arrived in what is now east-central Indiana. One group of settlers named themselves the Canaries because they were able to find coal near their settlement site on Redwood Creek. When coal mining became popular in Ohio and other states during the 1830s and 1840s, many entrepreneurs decided to come out west and start mines inIndiana Territory (now Michigan). In 1846–47 Captain John Fenton took his small party of men across Redwater Creek into what is now east-central Indiana to prospect for coal while also exploring for land grants from President James K. Polk that would allow him build a rail line through central Indiana from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis (Fenton’s mapsheet does not survive but he recommended that easternIndiana be surveyed as much as possible so it could become part of what would become Illinois). After traveling through Wisconsin Territory (later Iowa) they reached Clearfield Township on July 24th 1850 just south of present day EastChicago; this was only their second visit west of Illinois since leaving Kentucky two years previous! They were accompanied by David Ladd who had been sent out by John Stephenson with orders to explore for mineral rights northward along present day Lake Michigan on behalf of US Senator Daniel Webster who had recently been elected President under American Republican Party banner In 1881 when east-central Indiana was organized as a village charter application was filed with Cook County Circuit Court clerk Adolph Janssen stating "that there are people hereabouts who know something about raising corn or getting drunk at night." There seems no evidence that alcohol played any role whatsoever in early development or social activity within this burgeoning community which quickly emerged as one of the most thriving agricultural settlements in southeastern Indiana until prohibition began putting an end to such activities almost immediately thereafter; however some residents did still manage purchase liquor licenses beginning around 1890 Accordingly after lengthy argument both parties reached an agreement whereby “Echchi” should be anglicized “East Chicago” pursuant Mayor George Wickersham’s recommendation becoming effective January 1st1891 . This event helped solidify downtown business areas as well as bringing immigrants - primarily Irish Catholics - together into one cohesive area helping spur economic growth which continued until prohibition ended nearly fifty years later A wave of Prohibition-era crime pushed prices for beer and whiskey skyrocketing throughout much southern Illinois leading some businesses owners to move their operations towards Detroit – including several prominent entrepreneurs associated with Stonington Steel Works – lured by cheap labor costs and access to raw materials found only within Tennessee/Alabama/ Mississippi soils rather than expensive pre-Prohibition Illinois soil As violence increased following repeal numerous businessmen formed gangs known collectively as White Guerrilla Force smugglers transporting contraband across state lines via train into adjacent Michigan Territory served mainly among those seeking relief from gangrene stricken parts Of America particularly Kansas City Missouri Valley etc... resulting daily death rates averaging over 50%. Gangsters became increasingly more power hungry displacing established politicians interests rapidly eroding trust & mutual respect amongst citizens gradually dwindling support base over time & members eventually turned against each other becoming quasi mafia type organizations
