They began building small homes around what is now downtown East Chicago and soon numbered over 100 people according to one report In 1845, Harrison sold his interest in EastChicago for $5,000 to Elijah Woods which led to an increase in housing stock offering opportunities for growth and development including streetscape improvement projects such as piers and lighting systems In 1846 at Harrison's death his son-in-law James Reese bought out Harrison's interest which allowed Reese family control over much more land east of Kankakee River than they could ever hope to receive through grants or purchases alone so they could continue developing business area into today’s downtown . Starting with just five blocks east off State Street they quickly built up hundreds more houses becoming one of America’s earliest large townspeople
