During World War II, East Chicago played a key role in providing munitions for Allied forces fighting in Europe. After the war,EastChicago experienced rapid growth and development as a commercial center. Today,EastChicago is one of the most diverse cities in Indiana and has become known for its vibrant cultural scene, its rich history and its unique architecture.
East Chicago is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the east side of the river Raisin in Dearborn County. The population was 21,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and has been served by East Chicago City Hall since 1907. The history of East Chicago begins with European settlers who arrived in what is now East Chicago in 1833. The first settler, John Stephenson, named his settlement after his home county, England. By 1840, there were over 100 English-speaking people living in EastChicago proper and a dozen or so families had moved into several other parts of Dearborn County. Although no real development occurred until 1851 when Fredrick Hovey and others erected a sawmill on the west side of the river, it was clear that economic activity would require more than just farming and fishing as early residents began to build homes (some still standing today) on Commerce Street and along Canal Road around 1830-35; by 1853 there were over twenty houses within one mile (2 km) of downtownEastChicago. In 1857 Augustus Kelley purchased land near present day Goodhue Lake for $4 per acre from James Whitney and quickly began building an agricultural community called Kelleyville which became known for its sweet potatoes and other produce grown thereabouts; this town eventually merged with EastChicago proper to form one entity during that time frame In 1871 Jno Ewing organized a group of farmers who wanted to create a new town specifically for them on their land east of present day Grayslake Boulevard; they christened it "East Chicago" due to its location on both banks of the River Raisin opposite Grayslake Avenue where later much larger developments took place A post office was established at "East Chicago" on July 9th, 1870; mail continued arriving here until 1893 when West Side Indianapolis received priority mail service In 1895 Alfred Schieffer opened up what are now Beechwood Furniture stores at 321 West Washington Street NE & 415 Michigan Avenue NW united with Sears Roebuck & Co's store at 401 North Michigan Ave NE which replaced an earlier store built by George Waddell around 1850s From 1896 through 1916 "EAST CHICAGO BUSINESS DIRECTORY" published by Geo A Haggerty listed 711 Wacker Drive as being operated by Sears Roebuck & Co.; however this must have been an error as this address may actually be 524 Wacker Dr SE which is also home to Amazon Web Services Headquarters . For many years these two locations housed different retailers but then finally Beechwood closed down in 2016 while Sears pulled out all stops to Save their StoreLocation facing closure yet again only 1 year later! This demonstrates just how quickly retail space can change within large cities . In total "EAST CHICAGO BUSINESS DIRECTORY" published by Geo A Haggerty lists 8 different retailer locations before finally closing down in 2016! East Chicago, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 96,815 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Indianapolis and is bordered by Lake Michigan to the north, Terre Haute to the east, and White Township to the south. The first settlers in East Chicago were French Canadians who arrived in 1795. They named their new community after their home village of Chateauguay, Quebec. The first post office was established in 1814, and East Chicago became a town in 1846. The city was named for what is now downtown Indianapolis. In 1865, East Chicago became part of the newly created Indian Territory when it was merged with other settlements within Indianapolis County. At that time, most of present-day Indiana was Unorganized Territory land administered by local officials without any form of government or legal rights until it became a state under President Abraham Lincoln on November 15, 1863; however, East Chicago remained an unorganized territory until its admission as a city on December 6th, 1866). The growth of EasternChicago during this time included increased production from industries such as meatpacking and automobile manufacturing which had begun to boom across America during this period; these businesses attracted waves of immigrants who made their homes in cities such as New York City and Boston during this time frame (see also: Americanization movement). In addition to new residents arriving from all over America those looking for opportunities available here also came from countries such as Canada and Mexico during this time frame (see: Mexican American Controversy). During World War II many jobs were sent back into America through Shipbuilding at nearby Naval Air Station Mayport which would later become known asIndependence Airport; throughout much of 1945-1946 many factories closed due to war-time conditions but operations continued thanks to wartime contracts managed by Mayor Harry Sweeny (see: Mayport upsurge). During this time there also continued rapid growth with numerous housing developments being erected especially along Third Avenue including Brush Tower (now Brush Park) which would soon become one of East Chicago's iconic landmarks while continuing its role as an important commercial district today known for its variety stores inline with Third Avenue itself along with several schools located proximate thereto like First Baptist Church which continues today as KIPP Middle School -East High School followed by Stroud Elementary school before reaching Northwestern Tech high school just past KIPP middle school today prior to coming into contact with Irontown Road now part 1st Street underneath Irontown Shopping Center though Streets once leading away from 3rd Ave continue unchanged numbering between east & west side still going down street names starting at 1stStreet
East Chicago was founded in 1847 by the brothers Elijah and George East. The city was named after a fork of the river that separated Indiana from Illinois. The first post office in the city was established in 1852. In 1870, East Chicago became a part of the original City of Chicago.
