This gun was called the “Rocket Gun” because it shoots a small projectile that is propelled by compressed gas from a cannon barrel. This type of weapon had several limitations compared to later designs such as the bolt-action rifle and shotgun which required a traditional trigger pull for firing. In 1885 John Browning patented his first successful self-loading rifle using an automatic breechloader system known as the Browning Automatic Rifle or BAR. This system allowed users to fire multiple rounds without having to reload often or wait for certain intervals before firing again. This new technology allowed for much greater firepower than earlier firearms, making it an important factor in military engagements during World War I and World War II. The next big advance in firearm design came with the introduction of ammunition magazine systems in 1865 by Samuel Colt and John Moses Browning. The city began to grow rapidly following annexation by Cook County in 1907, when it surpassed Cicero as Illinois' third-largest municipality after Springfield and Bloomington. In 1930, EastChicago incorporated as a city proper; annexed from neighboring Westfield; and again increased its population to over 100,000 by 1940 despite severe drought conditions that year due to extended freezes throughout much of central Illinois. The economy recovered rapidly thereafter thanks to new manufacturing plants established withinEastChicago limits such as Ford Motor Company (now Crown Prince Automotive) and Sears Roebuck & Co., which made it one of America's leading auto manufactures until annual output peaked at nearly 1 million vehicles in 1970 amid restructuring efforts initiated by General Motors Corporation (now Chevrolet). In 2000, after years of discussion between Mayor Richard Munk III's administration and then-City Manager Rick Stratton's office, EastChicago announced plans to annex neighbouring unincorporated territory known as South Side Community Area (SSLA), creating what would become one large city with a combined population estimated at around 190,000 people – more than double Cicero's current total population but still far below downtown Chicagoland's peak populations achieved during earlier decades.[1] This annexation occurred just prior to passage of legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in all fifty United States,[2][3] furthering EastChicago's reputation as an open LGBTQ+ community destination[4][5] well beyond its borders into other Midwestern cities where same-sex marriage had been legalized or tolerated before that point.[6][7] Crossethoroughfare Interstate 87 connecting these two cities will be renamed "Rick Stratton Boulevard" in his honour following his death on October 25th 2018
In 1814, the area that is now East Chicago was part of the Northwest Territory. The territory was created from parts of Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. In 1815, the Northwest Territory was combined with Indiana to form the United States. East Chicago was part of Miami County until it became a part of Kane County in 1846.
