Dyer is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dyer is named after William Dyer, an early settler. The community began as a log cabin on the banks of the White River in 1827. A post office was founded in 1829 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1830, John Hinton built a sawmill on the river and commerce grew quickly from this source; by 1840 there were two stores and twelve households with sixty-six people living here. In 1842, Ebenezer Sprague erected a large gristmill on the site which became known as Sprague & Company Mill No. 1 upon its completion that year. By 1850, grain production had reached $1 million per year and by 1860 this had increased to $5 million annually; milling continued until 1915 when it was supplanted by oil production due to technological advances. In 1897–98, Dyerites helped put together one of America's most successful amateur theatrical productions─the first time such an event had been staged outside New York City The community experienced rapid growth during World War II when many businesses opened up including four Marshall Field departments (the largest department store chain at that time) as well as several new factories which produced munitions for war purposes; however following the end of hostilities these businesses closed down or transitioned into other lines of business while portions of Dyer continue to operate today primarily as residential communities with some commercial activity taking place within their boundaries
